Things to know about Boutique Hotel Kärntnerhof

The smallest grand hotel in Vienna, which stands out for its ideal location, has been renewed with a blend of Viennese Art Nouveau, French flair and Italian elegance by Niccolò Grassi, the designer of Ferragamo. It is decorated with fine wallpaper, velvet seating and a collection of art by Alexander von Humboldt, consisting of animal motifs, butterflies, birds and ostrich eggs. This theme runs throughout the hotel. The Kärntnerhof is one of the few hotels in the 1st district to have its own roof terrace, which serves as a lounge in summer. From the terrace you can see the baroque towers of the Heiligenkreuzerhof. After the Second World War ended, the house, which today contains 41 rooms and 3 suites, became known as a brothel called “Madame Rosa”. It was appreciated as a favorite Viennese hotel by the Austrian film actress Christiane Hörbiger, who had a special connection with the hotel. Her pug “Loriot” often resided in the house and was cared for by the staff.

“For centuries, Vienna was a meeting place for artists, intellectuals and merchants from all over Europe. We wanted to tie in with this in the design of the hotel,” says Nicole Nagel, who as part-owner and managing director of the Kärntnerhof is jointly responsible for the design. She grew up in the hotels of Europe, her father Friedrich Nagel started as a hotelier in the 1950s with two Berlin addresses: the Hotel Plaza (Knesebeckstraße) and the Viennese restaurant Old Vienna on Kurfürstendamm. Hotel operations followed in Italy, Spain and Germany. In the 80s, the family, which came from Vienna, acquired the Kärntnerhof. Nicole Nagel was able to win Italian designer Niccolò Grassi and Belgian Eline de Potter for its redesign. Eline de Potter curated the private collection of paintings and art objects and contributed to the hotel’s color scheme. It exudes a warm and cozy atmosphere. Niccolò Grassi designed most of the furniture and lamps in the Kärntnerhof. The green-gray boiserie in original Viennese Art Nouveau colors comes from Tuscan manufacture. Fauteuils and sofas were made by a Belgian furniture maker, even furniture accessories were handcrafted in Florence especially for the hotel. The wallpapers come from renowned companies such as Farrow Ball (England), Osborne Little (England) and Sandberg (Sweden). They form a classical and at the same time modern background for art, for example for the portrait of Christiane Hörbiger, who was photographed by the icon of fashion photography, Elfi Semotan. The picture hangs in the Christiane Hörbiger Suite.
