Vienna Boutique Hotel Kärntnerhof: Useful information
The Kärntnerhof, Vienna’s most charming grand hotel in miniature, impresses with its unique location and was redesigned under the creative direction of Niccolò Grassi, the renowned designer for Ferragamo. This redesign combines Viennese Art Nouveau with French charm and Italian elegance, which is reflected in the finely selected wallpaper, the velvet-covered seating and an exquisite art collection. The latter was designed by Alexander von Humboldt and includes a variety of animal motifs, including butterflies, birds and ostrich eggs, which characterize the unique ambience of the hotel. As a special highlight, the Kärntnerhof has a roof terrace which serves as a lounge in the summer months and from which guests can enjoy the view of the baroque towers of the Heiligenkreuzerhof. The history of the hotel, which today has 41 rooms and 3 suites, is just as fascinating: after the Second World War, it was known as “Madame Rosa”, a brothel. The Austrian actress Christiane Hörbiger, who had a special affinity for this place, counted the hotel among her favorite places in Vienna. Her pug Loriot often enjoyed the hospitality of the house and was lovingly looked after by the staff.
“For centuries, Vienna served as a meeting place for artists, thinkers and traders from all over Europe. We wanted to take up this tradition in the design of the Kärntnerhof,” explains Nicole Nagel, who, as co-owner and managing director of the hotel, played a key role in the design. Having grown up in the hotels of Europe, she follows in the footsteps of her father Friedrich Nagel, who started his hotel career in the 1950s with the Hotel Plaza in Berlin and the Viennese restaurant Old Vienna on Kurfürstendamm. This was followed by further operations in Italy, Spain and Germany. In the 1980s, the Viennese family acquired the Kärntnerhof and relied on the talents of the Italian designer Niccolò Grassi and the Belgian Eline de Potter for its redesign. The latter curated the private art collection and contributed to the color scheme of the hotel, which now radiates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Niccolò Grassi is responsible for the design of most of the furniture and lamps in the hotel. The green-grey boiserie, made in original Viennese Art Nouveau colors from a Tuscan manufactory, as well as armchairs and sofas from Belgian production and furniture accessories specially handmade in Florence characterize the ambience. The wallpapers from renowned manufacturers such as Farrow Ball, Osborne Little and Sandberg give the rooms a classic yet modern background that perfectly sets the scene for the works of art, including a portrait of Christiane Hörbiger by fashion photography icon Elfi Semotan, in the Christiane Hörbiger Suite.
